What is coworking and how does it work? A guide for people who have never tried it
Coworking is a shared office where you rent a desk instead of a whole building. That is the short version. Here is the version that helps you decide whether it is for you.
The plain-language definition
A coworking space is an office building used by many different companies and self-employed people at the same time. You do not rent space, you buy a membership: a desk, or an office, plus the use of everything shared, from the WiFi and the kitchen to the meeting rooms and the people. The operator runs the building; you walk in and work.
The kinds of workspace
Flex desk: no assigned seat, you pick a free desk each day. Fixed desk: your desk, the same one every day, your things stay put. Private office: a lockable room for you or your team, inside the same building. Day pass: one day, no membership. Most spaces also offer meeting rooms by the hour and a business address without a desk, called a virtual office.
Who it works for
Freelancers who have stopped being productive at home or stopped talking to anyone. Startups that do not want to sign a five-year lease. Remote employees of a company elsewhere who want a decent place and colleagues nearby. Small teams that need their own room but not their own building. And increasingly, people who move between cities and want the same base everywhere.
Who it does not work for
If you need total silence, an open floor is the wrong place and you should look straight at a private office. If you need heavy equipment or a workshop, you need something else. And if you come in once a month, pay per day.
What a day looks like
You come in with your pass or code, outside office hours too if you have 24/7 access. You get a coffee, sit down and work. When a call comes in, you use a phone booth or a meeting room instead of the whole floor listening in. When a client visits, you book a room by the hour. In between you bump into people working on something completely different, and that is the part most members later describe as the most valuable.
What it costs
At YOUNG Workspaces a day pass starts at €22, a flex desk at €113 per month, a fixed desk at €165 and a private office at €299 (first six months, excl. VAT). WiFi, utilities, cleaning and coffee are included. The full breakdown is in how much does a coworking space cost.
How to start
Not with a contract. Book a free tour or buy a day pass and work a day at the location you are considering, ideally on a day when you normally struggle at home. Notice the light, the noise, how busy it is and whether you feel welcome. If it fits, choose between flex and fixed after that. Our locations in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rijswijk and Valencia all work this way.
