How much does a coworking space cost? Prices per desk, with nothing hidden
The price of coworking is not one number. It depends on the kind of desk, how often you come in, and what is or is not included. Here is the arithmetic.
The four price levels
Day pass. You pay per day, no contract. At YOUNG Workspaces that is €22 in Valencia and €36 in The Hague, with a half day at €22. The most expensive option per day, the cheapest if you only come in now and then.
Flex desk. A monthly membership without an assigned seat. From €113 per month in Amsterdam and The Hague (for the first six months, €150 after that) and €180 in Valencia. If you come in more than four days a month, this is already cheaper than day passes.
Fixed desk. Your own desk, 24/7. From €165 in Valencia, €225 in Amsterdam and €262.50 in The Hague during the first six months (€220, €300 and €350 after that). The difference over a flex desk buys you not carrying your things around, and the same seat among the same people.
Private office. A lockable room for a team. From €563 per month in The Hague and €2,250 in Amsterdam during the first six months (€750 and €3,000 after that), depending on size. Per person, a team of four often pays less than four fixed desks.
What is included
With us: WiFi, utilities, cleaning, coffee and tea, use of the kitchen and shared areas, and 24/7 access on fixed desks and offices. That is not the case everywhere. The question to ask any provider is not "what does a desk cost" but "what does a month of working cost, everything included".
The extras to ask about
Meeting rooms: with us from €25 per hour, also for non-members, and some memberships include meeting hours. Printing. A business address or company registration (with us, a virtual office from €90 per month). Parking. Deposit and notice period. A low monthly price with four extras is often dearer than an all-in one.
An honest sum for a freelancer
Say you want to work away from home three days a week. Twelve day passes cost €264 to €432 a month. A flex desk costs €113 to €135. A fixed desk €165 to €262.50. At that point the choice between flex and fixed is no longer about price but about whether you want to leave your things behind. More on that in flex desk or fixed desk.
When coworking is not the cheapest choice
If you need a desk one day a month, a day pass is all you need. If you are a team of fifteen coming in every day, your own office starts to make sense at some point, although you then pay for fit-out, internet, cleaning and a multi-year lease yourself. For everything in between, which is most of the founders we see, flexibility wins the sum.
