Flex desk or fixed desk: which one fits the way you work?

Both give you a professional place to work. The difference is not the desk, it is how predictable your week is.

Start with how many days you actually show up

The honest test is not what kind of worker you think you are, it is your calendar. Count the days you worked outside your home in the last four weeks. Three or more days a week, consistently, and a fixed desk usually wins. One or two days, or a pattern that changes with client work, and a flex desk is the cheaper and less frustrating choice.

People tend to buy the setup they aspire to rather than the one they use. A fixed desk you visit once a week is an expensive locker.

What a flex desk actually gives you

A flex desk means no assigned seat. You come in, you take a free spot, you work, you leave. At YOUNG Workspaces that starts at €113 per month during the first six months at Zeestraat and Kerkstraat, and €135 in Valencia Cabanyal. You get the same WiFi, the same kitchen, the same coffee and the same people as everyone else in the building.

It suits you if your week is unpredictable, if you travel between cities, or if you mostly need somewhere to be that is not your kitchen table. It is also the low-risk way to find out whether coworking works for you at all.

What a fixed desk changes

A fixed desk is yours. Your monitor stays where you left it, your chair is set to your back, your things are in a drawer instead of a backpack. Fixed desks start at €165 per month in Valencia, €225 in Amsterdam and €262.50 in The Hague during the first six months, and they include 24/7 access.

The part people underestimate is the social one. When you sit in the same place every day, the same people sit next to you, and that is where the actual value of a coworking space shows up: the introduction, the referral, the second opinion on a proposal.

Three questions that settle it

Do you need to leave equipment behind? A second monitor, a drawing tablet, a camera bag. If yes, fixed desk. Carrying gear back and forth gets old in two weeks.

Do clients or colleagues come to you? If you need a meeting room regularly, look at what each option includes. Fixed desk memberships often come with meeting room hours; flex desks usually book them by the hour, from €25.

Is your income steady? A flex desk is easier to pause. If your year has quiet months, the flexibility is worth more than the saved setup time.

You do not have to guess

A day pass costs €22 in Valencia and €36 in The Hague, with no contract. Spend a day in the building you are considering, at the time of day you would normally work, and you will know more than any comparison article can tell you. If it fits, we will move you onto the right membership from there.
